Backup Power UPS
A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) backup power system is a device that provides emergency power to a load when the primary power source fails. Typically used to protect computers, data centers, telecommunication equipment, and other electrical systems from unexpected power disruptions, a UPS can prevent data loss, hardware damage, and downtime. It typically consists of a battery or flywheel backup, an inverter, and electronic circuitry. When regular power is available, the UPS charges its internal battery. In the event of a power outage, it quickly switches to its backup battery to provide a continuous power source, allowing for safe equipment shutdown or bridging the time until backup generators come online. UPS systems can vary in size from small units designed for a single computer to large systems powering entire data centers or buildings.
Power Distribution Unit
A Power Distribution Unit (PDU) is a device used in data centers, server rooms, and other settings to distribute electrical power to equipment such as servers, networking hardware, and telecommunication systems. PDUs transform the high voltage and current from a main power source into a usable format for individual pieces of equipment. They often come equipped with multiple outlets and are designed to provide reliable, organized power distribution. Modern PDUs can offer features like remote monitoring, metering of power consumption, and even individual outlet control for advanced energy management and redundancy. They play a crucial role in ensuring that critical IT equipment remains powered and operational while also helping to manage and optimize energy usage.
