Data from video surveillance systems is and will continue to grow at an astounding pace. Video surveillance cameras continue to improve in stream resolution and framerate, which means that stream bitrates continue to grow. Further, organizations typically find themselves in need of increased video retention for the legal, policy or legislative purposes. As data volumes increase at an accelerating pace, companies are striving to determine the best strategy with respect to the management, preservation, and retention of their surveillance data for the durations required. As such, it is prudent for a business to store their video surveillance data to a destination that is flexible and scalable, allowing security personnel to focus on their core task of securing people and property, rather than worrying about how their data is being stored and whether or not it will be available when it is needed.

There are several challenges that are readily apparent when considering a repository for surveillance video—including cost, complexity, and controlto name a few. Traditionally, the solution for video retention has been spinning disk drives configured in JBOD or RAID, all contained in a rack mounted server. However, such solutions have a difficult time scaling due to the complexity of managing multiple disparate drive volumes and the data redundancy implications of RAID sets with ever-larger hard drives. Many organizations have simply relied upon an ever-growing number of NVR’s (Network Video Recorders) and others have looked to SAN (Storage Area Network) solutions. Still others have even considered the public cloud as a possible solution.

To address all these challenges, Veritas designed the Access Appliance as a purpose-built, on-premises storage appliance for the video surveillance retention use case.
