6 Things To Consider When Picking a Computer Monitor

Although they are commonly just referred to as computers, the screen of your computer isn’t actually the computer. Technically it is the computer monitor and its job is to display everything that is going on inside the computer in a visual way.

There are 6 main factors you should consider when purchasing your computer monitor.

  • Size
  • Resolution
  • Sound System
  • Response Time
  • Ports
  • Connectors

  • The rest of this article will go over each of these factors and tell you what you should be looking for when purchasing your computer monitor.

    1. Size

Before you consider any of the more technical aspects of a computer monitor, you’ll want to think about its size. Make sure that the size that you pick is small enough to fit in the space that you need it to fit in. However, you should also make sure that the screen is large enough that you won’t be straining to see or read what’s on your screen.

If you are someone that works on your computer regularly, you’ll likely want to invest in a larger monitor. This will make your work easier on your eyes and reduce eye strain by the end of the day.

    2. Resolution

After size, you’ll want to think about the resolution of the monitor.

If you are only using your monitor for writing or computer programming, things where the tiny details are not as important, then the resolution doesn’t matter as much. You should just make sure to pick a resolution that allows you to see clearly.

However, if you are working on photo or video editing, you should make sure to purchase a computer monitor with a high resolution. Most computer screens have around a 1080 p resolution, but in these cases, it may be better to invest in a monitor with a higher resolution of around 4K.

    3. Sound System

Another feature to consider is whether or not the monitor has a built-in sound system. For most users, you’re going to want to look for a monitor with built-in sound. That way you won’t have to waste desk space on extra speakers and you’ll be able to cut out another step in your setup process.

However, if you are planning on installing high-quality speakers you should do your best to find a model without speakers. That way you won’t deal with any interference from the built-in speakers when you are installing your own.

    4. Response Time

The response time of a monitor tells you how quickly the monitor can perform video image transitions.

On average, computer monitors have a response time of about 60 Hz. This will work perfectly fine for most computer users and you shouldn’t detect any noticeable lagging with this speed.

However, if you are working with videos or using your computer for gaming, you may want to invest in a monitor with a faster response time. Some of the faster monitor models can be found with response times of up to 120 Hz.

    5. Ports

When you purchase your monitor, you should check to see which types of ports it uses. These will be important because your keyboard and mouse will both connect to your monitor.

The majority of monitors use standard USB connections for these devices. However, nowadays many companies are moving toward using USB-C connections. Make sure that both your keyboard and mouse use the same type of USB connection that your computer does.

    6. Connectors

The last thing to consider before purchasing your computer monitor is the type of connection that it uses.

The majority of computer monitors are connected to the rest of the setup using an HDMI cable. Make sure that this is compatible with the rest of your setup before purchasing your monitor. If you purchase a monitor and the connector is not compatible with the rest of your setup, you will have to purchase a converter.

    Key Takeaways

Computer monitors are an essential part of your computer setup as they allow you to see what is going on inside your computer and allow you to interact with it.

Before purchasing a computer monitor, there are a few different factors that you should consider. These factors are the size, resolution, sound system, response time, ports, and connectors that the monitor comes with.
